Gabby Pahinui’s performance of “Yellow Roses” on Ry Cooder’s Chicken Skin Music was a real eye-opener for many of us who would later become enamored with the sound of the steel guitar. The brilliance of Gabby’s playing was that he could make something that wasn’t at all easy sound so easy and laid back. That really is the essence of his style. Many Hawaiian players possess that gift of craftiness that makes you scratch your head and wonder, “how did he do that?”
